Al-Shaheed Monument in Baghdad is a national memorial that was built in honor of the Iraqi war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the Iran-Iraq war. The structure is set is in a picturesque park. Baghdad Al-Shaheed Monument is also known as the Martyr's Monument. The Monument was inaugurated in 1983. Ismail Fattah Al-Turk is the person who is credited for building this monument. During the 1970's and 1980's, the government of Iraq invested huge sums to beautify the varied monuments of Baghdad. The Al-Shaheed Monument, Baghdad was one of them. The monument is situated along the East side of the Tigris River. It is located close to the Army Canal that separates Sadr city from Baghdad.
There is a circular water pool inside one of the dome shells. The shells are made of galvanized steel frame. The water of the pool comes cascading to the courtyard that is below it. The platform comprises of the monument of a museum and a library. There is also a lecture hall and exhibition gallery. Visitors can also come and relax with a cup of coffee in the cafeteria. The Baghdad Al-Shaheed Monument is presently one of the main symbolic structures of the country that is visited by many tourists.
